Mr.
Smith left his car outside his apartment one night, as usual, but when he came
down the next morning to his office, he discovered that the car wasn’t there.
He called the police and told them what had happened and they said that they
would try to find the car.
When
Mr. Smith came home from his office that evening, the car was back again in its
usual place in front of house. He examined it carefully to see whether it had
been damaged, and found two theater tickets on one of the seats and a letter
which said “ We’re very sorry. We took your car because of an emergency”.
Mr.
and Mrs. Smith went to the theater with the two tickets the next night and
enjoyed themselves very much.
When
they got home, they found that thieves had taken almost everything they had in
their apartment.
In
a remote part of Wales
is a railway halt called Morrow.
One
day, at a London
station, a certain traveler said to the booking-clerk: “ I want a ticket to
Morrow, please”.
The
clerk raised his eyebrows saying: “ If you want a ticket tomorrow, why not come
tomorrow for it?”
The
passenger replied:
“
But I want a ticket to Morrow today”.
“
I’ve told you, you can’t have a ticket tomorrow today, you’ll have to come
tomorrow for it”.
By
this time, the passenger was getting more and more annoyed, finally lost his
temper and yelled at the clerk:
“
Can’t you understand the king English? I want a ticket to a place called Morrow
at once”.
At
last it dawned on the clerk what the traveler really wanted and he said quite
calmly: “ Why didn’t you say so at
first? Here’s your ticket”.
Swift,
the famous English writer, author of Gulliver’s Travels, was one day traveling
on horse back with a servant. As it was raining, the roads were muddy. In the
evening the two travelers came to an inn. Before going to bed, Swift said to
his servant: “ My boots are dirty, clean them, please”. The servant was rather
lazy: besides, he was tired, so he went to bed without cleaning his master’s
boots.
The
next morning, when Swift saw the boots, he exclaimed: “ What, you have not
cleaned my boots!” The servant looked at him and answered: “ Well, sir, as the
weather is very bad, and we are to travel again, if I cleaned them now, they
would soon be as dirty as before”……” Very good, saddle the horses. We shall
start immediately”……..” But please, sir, we have not had our breakfast
yet”……..” Oh, never mind! Should you take your breakfast now, you would soon be
hungry again”.
